Implementing the “E” in STEAM

STEAM education is a focus for not only the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, but also for elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. In our technological society, students’ future careers will require a strong foundation of knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, however, many teachers feel ill-equipped to teach these subjects due to a lack of resources and expertise. To address this gap, the STEAM-3D Maker Lab and UOIT Faculty of Engineering have partnered with General Motors Canada to offer professional development and in-class support to elementary teachers in the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board.

Teachers from ten local schools will attend hands-on workshops at the university where they will learn to integrate STEAM concepts (with a particular focus on engineering) into their teaching. Subsequent classroom visits will reinforce these ideas and concepts, and provide additional support wherever needed.

The initial phase of this project will support over 20 local teachers and administrators and impact the learning of approximately 600 students. In addition to building a greater capacity for interdisciplinary learning, this project will increase awareness of engineering as a future career opportunity.
