Professional Development Courses (2019)

This summer, the STEAM-3D Maker Lab will be hosting several professional development courses for educators, administrators, and others looking to expand their teaching practice. See below for details. Click here to register for this summer’s sessions!


The Cutting-Edge Classroom (Registration Closed):

This three-day session will introduce attendees to a variety of topics related toinnovation in education, grouped into three main themes:

  1.  Inquiry, passion-based learning & global competencies.
  2.  Designing innovative learning spaces, including the makerspace.
  3.  Online learning in Ontario schools.

Choose from one of two dates:

($150 + HST) Monday July 29th – Wednesday July 31st:
This session will be offered in a hybrid learning format, with the first 2.5 days taking place at the STEAM-3D Maker Lab in downtown Oshawa, and the afternoon of the final day taking place online in Adobe Connect. Participants will have the opportunity to collaborate face-to-face and get hands-on with innovative learning materials.

($150 + HST) Monday August 12th – Wednesday August 14th:
This session will take place entirely online, in the Adobe Connect learning platform, for educators who are unable to travel to the Maker Lab or for those with a keen interest in the synchronous online learning experience. Attendees will engage with other educators in group activities and smaller breakout sessions.

Learning with k8 & InkSmith (Registration Closed):

In this three-day session, attendees will learn about coding, robotics, and the Internet of Things through k8 — an endearing but powerful robot that runs on a micro:bit and block or Javascript coding! This workshop will model passion-based learning through the design-thinking process, encouraging attendees to ideate, design, and create a passion-driven project with k8. Educators will also leave with a better understanding of maker pedagogies, coding, technologies associated with IoT, and strategies for connecting these tools and concepts to the curriculum.
