STEAM education is a focus for not only the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, but also for elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. In our technological society, students\u2019 future careers will require a strong foundation of knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, however, many teachers feel ill-equipped to teach these subjects due to a lack of resources and expertise. To address this gap, the STEAM-3D Maker Lab and UOIT Faculty of Engineering have partnered with General Motors Canada to offer professional development and in-class support to elementary teachers in the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Teachers from ten local schools will attend hands-on workshops at the university where they will learn to integrate STEAM concepts (with a particular focus on engineering) into their teaching. Subsequent classroom visits will reinforce these ideas and concepts, and provide additional support wherever needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initial phase of this project will support over 20 local teachers and administrators and impact the learning of approximately 600 students. In addition to building a greater capacity for interdisciplinary learning, this project will increase awareness of engineering as a future career opportunity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
